Inspiration from a 22 year old! Five Principles to Live by in 2015 By SimiJ

THINKING ABOUT LIFE LIKE, “I NEED TO SORT THIS THING OUT!”

First thing I thought of when I woke up a couple of mornings ago was, ‘it’s December 29th, one of the last three days of the year when people are constantly going on about reflecting on the past year, relating their “no new friends”, “2015 blessings loading” mantras, and I’m just here like, what next? What am I going to do once the clock strikes midnight?’

Here's my avatar!
Here’s my avatar!

Browsing through Instagram, seeing all the pictures people upload of themselves ‘being successful’ at doing their ‘thangs’, the fancy cars, the outfits, the fancy trips they can afford to seemingly eternity-away destinations. Some are even already doing what I’m aspiring to do, so what’s the point of me even trying that if there are already people doing it well?
*cue in me talking to myself*
There has to be something about you that will make others approach you, employ you, take a chance on you.
Keeping that confidence in yourself is essential to achieve your dreams, but it is also one of the most difficult things to do; especially like in my case, when you’re seeing others already doing what you want to do, and doing it well.
It makes me think, “well, what will you do that’s different? What could you make better? How will you prove yourself to the world?”
First thing first, what exactly do you want to do? Are you sure you’re not just interested in it because it’s the cool thing to do?
After a brief conversation with my friends, Cynthia, Tomi and Larnell, I realised, it’s not about others; it’s about you and your passion.
Number 1
Cut out everyone else’s voices and listen to your own.
What do you enjoy doing now?
What have you seen others doing over the year that you think you can learn too, enjoy and be good at?
And by enjoy, I mean it’ll feel more like a hobby and not a time-consuming job.
KSI, for example, is a 21-year-old British-Nigerian with over 9 million subscribers on YouTube… and is now a millionaire. What does he do? He records himself playing games on YouTube. Who would have thought right? Others were doing it before him, but he says that didn’t stop him because he knew it’s something he enjoys.
It’s all about finding what you love to do and being the best at it:
FOCUS ON YOU, YOUR PASSION, YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLD.
LEAVE YOUR MARK.
Number 2                                                                                                                                  Remind yourself of how good you are.
I’ve recently started a ‘BRAG BOOK.’ Yes, exactly that. I write down every compliment I am given that I can remember. We all have times when we feel down and out. When all the stress of having big dreams catches up to us and we start questioning our abilities.
A ‘Brag book’ reminds you of how great you are and how great other people think you are. It is not a way to boast about how talented you are or people think you may be, but a means to lift up your spirits. And re-energise the ambitious, hungry-for-success person in you.
Number 3                                                                                                                                  Develop yourself to the best you.
So many people venture into so many things without getting full or even mediocre knowledge about that particular area.                                   It’s important to learn the necessary new skills, conducts etc; so when you commence, you arrive with a bang!
NEVER STOP LEARNING NEW SKILLS.
I’ve taken it upon myself to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator and continue learning to play the saxophone. Just like how I learnt how to use Photoshop last year, enabling me to upload cool quote images on this blog, which I will start in the new year; and Final Cut Pro the year before. Next year, (2015), I can then also start designing my own fashion ideas and share them , instead of paying a hefty commission to someone else to do so.
It’s an absolute shame if you not having a particular skill or knowledge is what is holding you back.
INVEST IN YOURSELF.
Number 4                                                                                                                                Don’t let anyone make you believe you can only do one thing; You can do as many as you want!
That is what my manager at MTV told me. And I agree 100%. People tend to push you to focus on only one thing, one speciality, one area; but we are multi-faceted human beings and are able to multi-task. We are constantly looking for a challenge (or at least should be). Feed that part of you and become a master of all trades!
Lastly, remember to be a GIVER.
I would like to leave you with this quote I came across on Instagram:
“THE SECRET TO WEALTH IS SIMPLE: DO MORE FOR OTHERS THAN ANYONE ELSE DOES. BECOME MORE VALUABLE. DO MORE. GIVE MORE. BE MORE. SERVE MORE.”
