What I Learnt From Transformational Leaders
By Belayneh Alehegn From Ethiopia
We all are passionate and have immense desires to become successful in life. For this reason, we define success differently. Many of us want to have a house, a car, a family and as many followers as possible. Our wishes are limitless. There is no problem with all those wishes and for that matter naturally, we have less control over it. The commonest problem I see a lot of people make when they want to change their lives is when they go after too many things all at once. Lack of a focused approach and a defined vision is usually what is missing mostly.
It is too distressing to try to change too many things in your life all at once. This is because you will be overstretching your limited resources and efforts across so many things, as a result you are not able to achieve your set target. It’s just not sustainable in the long run.
Instead, adopt one of the best transformational leaders way of life; focus on changing one thing at a time. One should limit his or her needs to just a single, achievable and measurable target over a given realistic time frame. Focus on the area of priority that you want to see an immediate result, or an area that you want to produce real change. Then put your resources and effort on your preferred life goal every day.
Do you want to change your health, that of your family and community at large? Or do you want to focus on good education for your kids, neighbors or a community you lead? Or you want a car or a house first? If you want to start from taking care of your health, start making time every day to go to the gym, or do exercises like walking, jogging, or performing household chores like cooking healthy meals and so on. The principle is to have a clearly defined goal at a time.
When you have achieved your first priority target, then move to the next one. Continue to the next set objective and do focus your remaining resources and effort on this one at a time! Park the rest you have in mind until the current goal reaches its desired level.
However, be mindful that this doesn’t mean you can’t have two or more priorities at a time. It is possible to have multiple priorities as long as needs are in line with resources and time at hand. Obviously, impact is quicker and realistic to achieve when it matches the resources at your own discretion. One at a time makes a bigger impact quickly.
Once your first priority is met, it should be nurtured. If education is your first priority, update your knowledge with continuous professional development as a necessity. Education is not a one-time exercise. Nurturing already achieved priority shall be done in parallel with your second or successive targets.
By prioritizing your needs, directing your focus, energy and available resources towards one priority area at a time, you will start seeing change in your life. You will see the transformation you want in your own life and those you influence. You will see results much faster because you will be putting all you have into it. Every day you move an inch closer to your set target. Not because you are trying to do it all at once but one at a time! And working hard every minute for it! This is what I learnt from best transformational leaders and remains my principle in life, and consequently my advice to you as my friend, brother or sister!
I won’t be distracted easily, and no waves will redirect my destination in relying on this principle.
And let me close my blog with a famous quote: "The shortest way to do many things is to do only one thing at a time." - Richard Cech.
Have a blessed life!
