IMPACT
Written by Nankur Pontip Ramdur
My name is Nankur Pontip Ramdur, I am a young leader and student of the University of Jos, Nigeria. I am passionate about politics, I love volunteering for community work and I am driven by fixing the things I cannot accept.
I will like to start with a familiar quote by Les Brown, “The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered. All because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.” I believe that the people Les Brown was referring to were people who were afraid to make an impact, people afraid to insert a marked effect or influence.
I understand what it feels like to just sit back, be shy, comfortable and at the same time being scared of speaking out and doing what your heart wants so much. Preferring to just be ‘normal’ when every part of you wants to break free and challenge the status quo or change some people’s lives or do something in your community. As young leaders, we should be motivated by the great and the advantages of what we will be able to do rather than being let down by the fears of not succeeding. Failing shows you another way and many more different ways to do it again and make it right. I will like to share three ways we can impact positively.
KEEP DREAMING. Dreaming is not for kids alone, continue dreaming and imagining the greatest and ultimate things possible to man that you can do. Keep dreaming big and having great imaginations of what you want to achieve. “The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment.” Tony Robbins.
WRITE. “Writing down your goals means that you can visually see them”. When we see something, it affects how we act. You're more likely to be productive if you can see what you have to do, instead of just thinking about it. So, no matter how silly it might sound, pen it down, keep looking at it, and visualize it into reality.
START. Just start. It doesn’t matter how small. Begin. Your goal cannot be achieved on its own until you start. Once you start, you challenge yourself to finish.
Everything that the spider needs to make a spider-web is not found in the housefly... its right there in the spider! Whatever you need to make impact is in you! Discover yourself and make a difference!” ― Israelmore Ayivor. As young leaders, we should stop complaining and throwing criticism at every problem we see in our society (unless you will be paid for it) but try to fix those things we cannot accept. Be what we want to see and start making positive impact now. We should not be part of the population that plans to contribute to the wealth of the graveyard all because they are afraid. Impact now and trust me, your prints will forever be seen and your influence felt. It will be the only way we will be satisfied with the lives we are living and remembered after we are gone. So, IMPACT!
